Public Holidays for 2026

UPDATE: The NSW Government announced on 15 February 2026 that when Anzac Day falls on a weekend, an additional public holiday will apply on the following Monday for 2026 and 2027.

Anzac Day will remain fixed on 25 April each year, with all commemorative services continuing to take place on that date. The additional Monday holiday will operate alongside Anzac Day rather than replace it.

For businesses, this means an extra NSW public holiday on Monday 27 April 2026 and Monday 26 April 2027, which may affect rostering, trading arrangements and public holiday entitlements. More details are included in the Easter/Anzac Day Memo.

The temporary arrangement will form part of a broader NSW public holiday review scheduled to commence in 2027.

Please note that ACT government also announced an adjustment, Monday 27 April is now considered the ANZAC day public holiday in 2026.

How to pay for public holidays

All employees who are required to work on a public holiday will be paid in accordance with the applicable Award or Enterprise Agreement, the National Employment Standards, and their employment contract.

Employees who are paid a salary that already includes compensation for working public holidays will be paid as normal.

Full-time and part-time employees who do not work on a public holiday will be paid for their ordinary hours if the public holiday falls on a day they would normally work, in line with their Award, Agreement, or employment contract.

Casual employees are generally not paid for public holidays unless they work on the day.
